When flooring is being specified for a building serving thousands of people every week, appearance alone is never enough.
Birmingham City Church is one of the largest churches in the region, welcoming a congregation of more than 3,000 people while also operating as a busy community hub throughout the week. In addition to worship services, the building hosts conferences, children's activities, community programmes, meetings, external organisations and a twice-weekly foodbank.
The church required flooring capable of standing up to constant daily use while helping modernise key public-facing areas of the building.
Caine Flooring was appointed to undertake a major refurbishment programme involving extensive floor preparation, specialist removal works and the installation of a carefully selected combination of commercial flooring products tailored to the different demands of each space.
The refurbishment works covered a variety of areas throughout the church, including:
Main foyer and hospitality areas
Primary circulation spaces
Main staircases
Family rooms
Sound and recording booth
Secondary auditorium areas
Stage and platform areas
Access panels serving the baptism pool
The project involved the removal of existing floor finishes, extensive subfloor preparation and the installation of approximately 220m² of new commercial flooring systems.
Church buildings present unique challenges.
Unlike many commercial properties that are heavily used only during office hours, Birmingham City Church operates throughout the week and serves a wide variety of users.
Every week, thousands of congregation members, visitors, volunteers, community groups and external organisations pass through the building. The church's busy foodbank operation also generates substantial foot traffic through entrance and circulation areas, placing significant demands on the flooring.
The flooring therefore needed to be capable of withstanding years of intensive use while maintaining a professional appearance and remaining practical to maintain.
Rather than using a single flooring product throughout the building, a combination of flooring systems was selected to suit the differing requirements of each area.
Polyflor Expona Commercial was installed throughout the main foyer and hospitality areas.
These spaces form the public face of the church and experience some of the highest levels of traffic within the building. Visitors attending services, conferences, meetings, foodbank sessions and community events all pass through these areas on a daily basis.
Expona Commercial was chosen for its exceptional wear characteristics and proven track record in demanding commercial environments.
Its robust construction provides outstanding durability while maintaining a contemporary and welcoming appearance, making it ideally suited to a facility serving thousands of people each week.
The product's ability to withstand heavy traffic while remaining easy to maintain made it the natural choice for the church's busiest public-facing spaces.
Heckmondwike Supercord Anthracite was selected for a number of secondary areas throughout the church, including:
Main staircases
Family rooms
Sound and recording booth
Secondary auditorium spaces
Stage areas
Supercord has long been recognised as one of the most durable fibre-bonded floor coverings available for commercial and public buildings.
Its excellent wear resistance, acoustic benefits and ease of maintenance made it particularly well suited to areas experiencing varied daily use, equipment movement and regular activity.
The anthracite finish helped create a clean, modern appearance while offering practical long-term performance.
As with many refurbishment projects, much of the most important work took place before any new flooring was installed.
Existing floor finishes, including quarry tile installations, required removal before assessment of the underlying substrates could begin.
Specialist removal equipment and professional dust-controlled preparation methods were used throughout the project to prepare surfaces for the new flooring installations.
The scale of preparation required was significant.
In total, nearly five tonnes of levelling compound were installed throughout the project to create suitable substrates for the new floor coverings.
Using high-quality Mapei preparation systems, floors were brought up to the required tolerances before final floor coverings were installed.
While these works remain hidden once a project is complete, they play a critical role in ensuring the long-term performance and appearance of the finished installation.
The stage installation required several specialist details that went far beyond a standard flooring project.
Custom feature stripes were hand-cut and installed around the perimeter of the stage to create a clearly defined edge detail.
These bespoke inlays help improve visual definition of the stage while complementing the overall design of the space.
A further challenge was presented by the church's baptism pool, which is located beneath the stage and accessed through removable floor panels.
The flooring was carefully integrated into these access hatches, allowing them to remain fully operational while maintaining visual continuity across the finished stage surface.
Each panel was individually prepared and finished to ensure access could be retained whenever required without compromising the appearance of the installation.
Particular care was also required within the church's sound and recording facilities.
The sound booth was finished in Heckmondwike Supercord Anthracite, providing a practical and durable floor covering suitable for a technically sensitive environment.
Working around valuable production and recording equipment required careful planning and attention to detail throughout the installation process.
The finished result delivered a professional appearance while maintaining the functionality of an area that plays an essential role in the church's services and events.
Projects within active churches require a different approach from many commercial installations.
The building continued to support its wide range of activities and community functions, requiring careful coordination and planning throughout the refurbishment programme.
By working closely with church representatives and carefully scheduling the various phases of work, disruption was minimised while maintaining high standards of workmanship throughout the project.
The completed refurbishment has transformed key areas of Birmingham City Church with flooring systems designed to meet the demands of one of Birmingham's busiest community buildings.
From the highly durable Polyflor Expona Commercial installation within the foyer and hospitality areas to the practical and hard-wearing Heckmondwike Supercord installations throughout functional spaces, every element of the specification was selected with long-term performance in mind.
Combined with extensive preparation works, bespoke stage detailing and specialist installation techniques, the project has delivered flooring capable of supporting the church's congregation, foodbank operation, community programmes and external organisations for many years to come.
