Church buildings are some of the most demanding environments for flooring. They need to accommodate large congregations, community events, children's activities, live music, production equipment, kitchens, meeting spaces and day-to-day foot traffic, all while remaining welcoming and comfortable.
When Christian Life Church in Selly Oak decided it was time to refresh key areas of the building, flooring became a major part of the wider transformation.
The project involved approximately 500m² of refurbishment works across multiple areas of the church, replacing dated floor finishes with modern, durable solutions designed to serve the church for many years to come.
Having previously delivered successful church refurbishment projects, including works at Birmingham City Church, Caine Flooring was entrusted to deliver the project during the challenges of the 2020 COVID lockdown period, working as trusted keyholders and coordinating works safely throughout the programme.
Location: Selly Oak, Birmingham
Total Area Refurbished: Approximately 500m²
Main theatre and worship space
Stage area
Entrance and welcome spaces
Commercial kitchen
Circulation areas and access routes
The objective was simple: modernise the appearance of the building, improve durability, and create a brighter, more contemporary environment for both regular congregation members and visitors.
Much of the existing flooring dated back many years and featured green finishes that no longer reflected the church's modern and welcoming atmosphere.
The refurbishment centred around replacing these older finishes with contemporary charcoal flooring throughout the main worship areas, helping create a cleaner, more professional appearance while maintaining practicality for a busy multi-purpose venue.
The transformation was immediately noticeable.
What had previously felt tired and dated became a modern, inviting space better suited to the church's growing community and varied activities.
The church's primary gathering space received new charcoal carpet tiles throughout the main seating and circulation areas.
The chosen finish provides:
Excellent appearance retention
Easy maintenance
Individual tile replacement if required
Improved longevity in high-traffic areas
A modern, professional appearance suitable for worship and events
The stage area was refurbished to complement the main theatre flooring, creating a cohesive appearance across the entire worship space.
The new flooring provides a clean backdrop for services, presentations, performances and community events.
Approximately 35m² of Polyflor luxury vinyl tile flooring was installed within the entrance and welcome areas.
These spaces create the first impression for visitors entering the building, making durability and appearance equally important.
The selected Polyflor LVT provides:
Excellent wear resistance
Easy cleaning and maintenance
Realistic design finishes
Long-term performance in busy entrance areas
Approximately 60m² of Polyflor safety flooring was installed within the kitchen areas.
As a busy church facility serving numerous events and functions throughout the year, safety and durability were critical considerations.
The safety flooring system provides:
Enhanced slip resistance
Hygienic cleaning properties
Long-term durability
Suitability for commercial food preparation environments
The installation was completed using professional preparation methods and manufacturer-approved adhesives to maximise performance and longevity.

As with many refurbishment projects, the finished floor is only as good as the preparation beneath it.
Following uplift works, the subfloors were thoroughly assessed and prepared before any new flooring was installed.
Preparation included:
Mechanical removal of existing floor coverings
Subfloor inspection
Localised repairs
Floor smoothing and levelling
Application of appropriate primers and adhesives
Final preparation to create a stable installation surface
This careful preparation helps ensure long-term performance and compliance with relevant British Standards, including BS 5325 and BS 8203 where applicable.
One of the largest challenges on the project involved removing existing floor coverings that had been incorrectly and permanently bonded to the subfloor.
Traditional uplift methods would have been slow, disruptive and risked damaging the substrate.
Using specialist Wolff floor removal equipment, our team systematically removed the existing flooring while minimising damage to the underlying floor.
This approach allowed us to:
Increase efficiency
Reduce unnecessary substrate damage
Improve preparation quality
Maintain programme timescales
The church contains significant audio-visual infrastructure, recording equipment and technical systems worth many tens of thousands of pounds.
Dust contamination presented a genuine risk during removal and preparation works.
We utilised professional Dustcontrol Tromb 400 dust extraction systems throughout the project.
These systems help capture airborne dust at source, reducing contamination and maintaining a cleaner, safer working environment.
The result was a far cleaner preparation process than traditional removal methods.
Modern churches often function as production venues, with extensive investment in sound, lighting and recording technology.
Christian Life Church was no exception.
Significant care was required around:
Recording booths
Sound desks
Audio equipment
AV infrastructure
Cabling systems
Production equipment
Works were carefully phased and coordinated to protect sensitive equipment throughout the refurbishment programme.
Close communication with church representatives ensured flooring works could progress safely while maintaining protection for valuable technical assets.
Environmental responsibility formed an important part of the project.
Existing flooring materials were removed responsibly and disposed of through appropriate licensed waste streams wherever practical.
By carefully separating waste materials and minimising unnecessary damage during removal, we were able to reduce waste and support a more sustainable refurbishment process.
A particularly unique aspect of this project was its timing.
Much of the refurbishment took place during the COVID-19 lockdown period in 2020.
Christian Life Church placed significant trust in Caine Flooring by providing keyholder access, allowing works to continue while maintaining building security and reducing unnecessary site traffic.
Measures included:
Localised working teams
Distanced working practices
Controlled access arrangements
Site-specific action plans
Careful scheduling and coordination
The project was completed safely while adhering to the guidance and requirements in place at the time.
Church refurbishment projects require more than simply fitting flooring.

Our previous successful church projects, including Birmingham City Church, helped give Christian Life Church confidence that the project would be delivered professionally from start to finish.
The completed refurbishment successfully transformed key areas of the church.
The dated green flooring was replaced with contemporary charcoal finishes, creating a cleaner, brighter and more modern environment throughout the building.
Combined with the new Polyflor LVT entrance areas and safety flooring within the kitchen, the result is a practical and attractive flooring solution designed to support the church's activities for many years to come.
Most importantly, the refurbishment helped create a space that feels welcoming, contemporary and ready for the future while continuing to serve the congregation and wider community at the heart of Christian Life Church.
